Lars Tibben is the owner of The Urbanites, an online fashion, hotspot and travel platform. He posts photos of the many cities he visits for inspiration to his Instagram account. This time around, he travelled to Antwerp, sharing his favourite hotspots in the city, including a mix of trendy places to eat and fun shops. Usually Lars tries to steer clear of the high street in a city, exploring the side streets instead.

Tinsel

Feel like a good breakfast or a tasty lunch? Head to Tinsel! This fun hotspot in Antwerp’s Zuid district is located just outside the city centre. You’ll run into plenty of locals, who also enjoy the delicious food on the menu. Write down your order on a sheet of paper and then all you have to do is wait until it is brought to your table. You’ll notice the cosy living room atmosphere as soon as you step inside. Tinsel serves breakfast and lunch until 4 p.m.

Vlaamse Kaai 40

Arte Antwerpen

Antwerp streetwear label Arte Antwerp has a shop in Kammenstraat. The clean and no-nonsense interior reflects the brand’s values. Arte has been inspired by the city from the start and has already created a collection inspired by the clothing of the dock workers in the port of Antwerp. In 2009, Bertony Da Silvia launched the brand while still at school, creating T-shirts for his friends, under the Artenative brand. It soon became an international hit, leading to his first shop in the centre of Antwerp in 2016.

Vitrin

Ask locals in Antwerp’s Zuid district where they like to go for a drink and many of them will immediately say Café Vitrin. The café is known for its creative crowd, good coffee, nice wine and has one of the finest terraces in the city. On sunny days, you might find it hard to grab a seat but it is always worth trying. The wooden interior is simply, but stylish and cosy. In the evening, Vitrin is the place to go for a nice Belgian beer.

Marnixplaats 14

Denham The Jeanmaker

The shop of Amsterdam denim brand DENHAM The Jean Maker is located in the centre of Antwerp and sells amazing denim collections for men, women and children. The brand is a real hype in the Netherlands. Opening a shop in Antwerp was the logical next step. The DENHAM design team associates Antwerp with fashion and culture, something that Jason Denham has always appreciated about the city.

Lombardenvest 32

Black Smoke

Meat lovers must definitely include Black Smoke on their list of hotspots to visit. Many say it’s the best BBQ restaurant in all of Antwerp. Black Smoke is located in the De Koninck city brewery, where craftsmanship is a way of life. There are several artisans onsite, including a cheese shop, a bakery, a chocolate maker and a butcher. The owners of Black Smoke took a road trip to the southern states of the US for inspiration, testing 40 different BBQ restaurants. That is why it is safe to say that they are the quintessential BBQ restaurant of Antwerp. Check out the rooftop bar on summer nights to enjou the view.

Boomgaardstraat 1

Butchers Coffee

If it’s good coffee you’re looking for, then look no further. Butcher’s Coffee in Antwerp’s Zuid is located in a former butcher’s and is a proper coffee par. It was founded by Dave Haesen and Paolo Guffens who worked in several cities around the world as baristas, including Melbourne, London and Vancouver. And their international style is reflected in their concept, and their excellent coffee. Find a seat on the large terrace and enjoy the nice ambience and the coffee of course!

Kasteelstraat 57

Fiskebar

As its name indicates, Fiskebar is a fish restaurant. It probably is the best fish restaurant in town because it’s a full house here every evening. All the fish and seafood you are served here is fresh, from the sea to your plate. Were you unable to book a table? Then pop into Osterbar next door for a seat at the bar.

Marnixplaats 11

FOMU Fotomuseum

The Photo Museum or FOMU as it is called is really worth visiting. Every month it hosts exhibitions of work by international photographers. I visited this museum years ago to see an exhibition of Albert Watson, one of my favourite photographers. The museum is conveniently located near several fun places to eat.

Waalsekaai 47

Rains

Popular Danish brand Rains opened a shop here in September. The brand is famous for its functional and stylish raincoats, so you can always brave the elements while looking stylish. The shop’s interior ties in with the brand’s philosophy and is minimalist, innovative and stylish. The shop sells a wide range of jackets, bags and accessories.

Kammenstraat 45

Fonteyne The Kitchen

At Fonteyne The Kitchen, they serve fresh food daily. You’ll feel those hunger pangs the minute you see all the tasty dishes in the display. You can take away a meal or eat it in the restaurant. All the dishes are tasty, without additives.
