The Messiah was already a hit during Händel’s lifetime. The first performances of this oratorio attracted so many spectators that women were requested to leave home their hoop skirts to create more space for other audience members.
The success and many performances of this composition culminated in the circulation of a large number of variants of the Messiah. None of these is the definitive version, as Händel regularly adapted the score for specific productions.
Händel composed the Messiah at a mad pace in the winter of 1741-42. The three-part oratorio is based on texts from the Bible, about the birth, the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, which the composer has transformed into magnificent arias and choruses. The Academy of Ancient Music under the inspired lead of conductor Richard Egarr has an unrivalled command of all the aspects and emotions of this oratorio, from moving restraint to the majestic rousing Hallelujah. Or as the Financial Times (2013) wrote: “Forty years on, and 300 recordings later, the Academy of Ancient Music is a leader in the field.”
