AMUZ [Festival of Flanders – Antwerp] has compiled a programme of music, the visual arts and architecture from the Baroque era for 2018. Nowadays the early Baroque Church of St. Augustine is an acoustic gem and concert hall but during “Antwerp Baroque. Rubens inspires”, this restored heritage site will be revealed in all its glory.
Neither money nor effort were spared for the celebrations that marked the marriage of Ferdinando I de' Medici and Christine de Lorraine in 1589. The highlight of the festivities in Florence, however, was the performance of Girolamo Bargagli’s play, La Pellegrina . The musical intermezzos or intermedii, which established a link between Greek mythology and the newly-weds, however, would go on to make history.
The six intermedii are at the crossroads of various musical styles – the swansong of the Renaissance can already be heard as the Baroque emerges. Polyphonic chorales and virtuoso arias, composed by contemporary composers, such as de Cavalieri, Caccini and Peri, combined to create an especially consistent score. Nicolas Achten, a vocalist and lute player, guides the soloists and musicians of cherzi Musicali through a musical dreamlike narrative.
Performers: Scherzi Musicali & Nicolas Achten, artistic direction.
