If you visit Antwerp, and you are coming from a sunny, sandy place straight into the grey skies of Belgium, you are probably feeling a little down. You didn’t bring any winter clothes with you and the only thing you want to do is spend some money on the few things that can make the stay in a Northern European city worthwhile: a good restaurant, decadent shopping, a decent play at a nice theatre. Great idea, but there is one little problem……there is no money left…

Shop cheap

Don’t worry! There are some cheap solutions that will cheer you up in no time. The first thing you should do is take care of your wardrobe. Stay warm or you will not be happy. Pay a visit to PARDAF (Gemeentestraat 8), a second hand palace that has everything you need to go around fashionably and it’s super cheap. They offer all the big fashion designer leftovers from people that have more money then you. Three whole floors with women’s clothes, a men department with great jackets and shirts, a children’s department and even furniture.

Eat cheap

Next thing you should do: cook a nice meal for your friends in the hostel. Go to the VOGELTJESMARKT on a Saturday or a Sunday, drink a coffee at the BERNINI or the LUNCHBOX, and buy some cheap and delicious food. There you will find all the fresh vegetables of the season, so that you can learn to love autumn again (all @ Theaterplein).

To the movies or have a beer

Once you are done with that dinner, take a moment for a good art house film at CARTOON’S. This little movie theatre is cheap, friendly and has a great program. You can surround yourself with sounds and images from more exotic places like France, Japan or Turkey, hiding in a big chair just behind the Grote Markt (Kaasstraat 4).

If all this will not help, and you are still sad and lonely, get warmed up and have a few Belgian beers just around the corner at DE MUZE (Melkmarkt 15) or WITZLI POETTZLI (Blauwmoezelstraat 8). A little jazz and a little alcohol will make you sing about your troubles tonight, and forget about them in the morning.
